Choosing Kindness
A Wellness Corner Blog Post By NRCDV’s Wellness Warriors
“When you have the choice of being right or being kind, chose to be kind.”
- Dr. Wayne Dyer
Every day we are given the opportunity to show kindness to others. It doesn’t matter the situation – a meeting at work, an encounter with a stranger or dinner with your family – showing kindness is always an option.
When you choose kindness, you surround yourself with positivity and good things. We all know that a single act of kindness is not going to change the world, but a daily commitment to choosing kindness can have positive, life-changing results for everyone involved.
Author Kim Forrester suggests following these three simple ways to spread kindness in your place of employment and your community:
1. Be aware of others
Throughout the day, practice being more aware of others around you. Take time during your day to check in with them. Is there something you can do to make their life a little easier in that moment?
2. Be spontaneous
Kindness is most effective when unexpected. Look for ways to surprise others around you: smile at strangers, offer to carry heavy bags, pay for the coffee order behind you.
3. Exercise empathy
We all have bad days, but by exercising empathy, we allow ourselves an opportunity to choose more conscious reactions to others. Thinking about what others might be experiencing can help us forgive a wrong done to us and move on without saying a word.
The next time you catch yourself focusing on being right, take a moment to remember that being right is ultimately less important than making kindness a priority and a life-enhancing daily habit.
