Thursday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Elder abuse affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world. This year highlights the importance of preventing financial exploitation in the context of elder abuse.
Major risk factors include social isolation, cognitive impairment, emotional or physical dependence on the perpetrator, poverty, widowhood and lack of support networks, in addition to ageism and other types of prejudice.
